Rationale
The boom in the oil and gas industry and natural resource extraction (i.e. coal and minerals) in the United States is accompanied by the need to produce sophisticated maps to accurately depict geographical data. To be able to respond to the demands of the industry for reliable and highly skilled technicians, there is a need to train the workforce particularly in cartography design and geographic information systems. Organizations use the power of Geographic Information System (GIS) to create, edit, and analyze their data in order to make better decisions.
Course description
This class will introduce the participants to the fundamental concepts of GIS and its application to oil and gas industry and other related fields, explore data collection using global positioning system (GPS) and the basics of cartography / map design using the latest GIS software (ArcGIS for Desktop10.2). The class will also provide online data sources and use free web-based GIS that can also be used in making maps.
Target audience
This course is for those who are new in geographic information systems or for those who need a refresher on the basics of GIS.
EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS AND DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS:
Everyone will need to bring a laptop (Windows PC ONLY) or plan to team up with someone who has a laptop. Mac / Apple system is not compatible with the software unless you have Parallels Desktop installed that can run Windows separately. ALSO, please have a computer MOUSE to use during class. Navigation to the software will be better executed using a mouse. You also need to TEST your laptop if it can handle to run the software. Please see instruction link below for details.
